What is misophonia?

Misophonia is a neurological disorder characterized by an intense and involuntary emotional and physiological response to specific sounds. Individuals with misophonia experience amplified feelings of anger, disgust, or panic when exposed to certain trigger sounds, which are typically ordinary and mundane noises like chewing, pen clicking, or sniffing. These sounds, which are often perceived as background noise by others, can evoke extreme distress and interfere with daily functioning. Although the exact cause and mechanisms of misophonia are not fully understood, it is believed to be relatively common and can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected.
